Clinical Services

OPCS offers a wide range of treatment and supportive services for persons experiencing substance use and co-occurring disorders. These services are provided at our outpatient office as well as satellite locations throughout the midtown area. Services can be provided on site in a transitional housing environment, which streamlines services and eliminates transportation barriers.

Commitment

We are committed to providing the best quality services to our clients. As a result, all clinical services are guided by the most current evidence based outcome informed practices. Specifically, we are committed to non-confrontational interventions, such as Motivational Interviewing, Community Reinforcement Approach, and Contingency Management. We ensure fidelity to these measures through training, peer coaching, and consultation provided by experts qualified in these evidence based practices. In addition, we only utilize methods that respect and incorporate our client’s individual cultural experience and beliefs. We utilize a secular cognitive behavioral foundation for our services, respecting our client’s right to infuse their own spiritual or religious practices without direct or indirect coercion to participate in any specific practice. We welcome all persons embracing diversity of ethnicity, religious preference, and sexual orientation.

Services

THERAPEUTIC PROCESS GROUP: This is a group therapy session, facilitated by a Behavioral Health Professional. The purpose of this group is to encourage change, by clients openly sharing thoughts and feelings with one another, through honest identification and respectful feedback. This is a safe place for clients to explore new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, to enhance well-being and a healthy recovery. Interaction among clients is considered an integral part of the therapeutic process. Every member is equal in this process and encouraged to share to then gain help and support from others.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: This is one to one therapy provided by a Behavioral Health Professional. A Person Centered approach to therapy is utilized, where the goal of therapy is personal growth achieved by client’s increased awareness and understanding of his/her thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The therapist utilizes a trans-theoretical model of change in conjunction with other evidence based recovery methods in order to promote affective, cognitive and behavioral change in clients. Any issue, past or present affecting a client and or their recovery can be processed through this therapy. The therapist models a congruent, empathic approach at all times.

DUI SCREENING, EDUCATION, AND TREATMENT: These services include assessment for substance abuse and referral to appropriate treatment services, provision of DUI Education, and DUI Treatment for Level I and II DUI offenders. At the conclusion of DUI Education/Treatment clients will be able to recognize the physiological effects of alcohol and drug use; How alcohol use and drug use affect an individual's ability to operate a vehicle, including how an individual's alcohol concentration is measured and how alcohol concentration impacts an individual's ability to operate a vehicle; Alternatives to operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drug use; The psychological and sociological effects of alcohol and drug use; The stages of substance abuse; Self-assessment of alcohol or drug use; Criminal penalties and statutory requirements for sentencing DUI clients; Alternatives to alcohol or drug use; Identification of different approaches to the treatment of substance abuse; Resources, programs, and interventions available in the community for treatment of substance abuse; and Orientation to the process and benefits of group counseling and self-help groups. A written pre and post-test is administered to a DUI client after receiving DUI education to measure the DUI client's knowledge of the subject areas listed above.

RECOVERY WORKSHOPS: These are hands-on, interactive groups that offer clients an opportunity to practice skills that will support their long term recovery. Workshop topics include but are not limited to goal-setting, dealing with urges/cravings, managing your time and money, relapse prevention, and managing emotions. These workshops use evidence based practices, such as Community Reinforcement Approach to help client move to through stages of proximal development.

GROUP PEER SUPPORT: The women’s Girl Talk program and the men’s Peer to Peer program are relaxed meetings where clients can talk with other people who have experienced the recovery process. The meetings are led by a trained and supervised peer who is stable in their recovery but is not a professional counselor. The groups focus on wellness (not illness) and give clients a chance to talk with others about ways to increase their personal recovery capital. Groups are based on the emerging peer recovery model.

INDIVIDUAL PEER SUPPORT: This is one-on-one coaching provided by a trained and supervised peer who is stable in their recovery, but not a professional counselor. This person is experientially credentialed, and can give clients support, encouragement, feedback, and coaching to help increase personal recovery capital.

CO-OCCURRING SERVICES: These services include individual counseling, group counseling, and individual life skills coaching for persons recovering from addiction and mental health concerns. These services are provided at our Glenn site, which includes access to Internet training, cooking in a model kitchen, gardening, and classes on specific skills such as budgeting and health concerns. Services are guided by theory of zone of proximal development, recognizing that there is a fluid optimal range of learning for each individual. Our coaches encourage growth within this range through individual skill based coaching supported by contingency management incentives.

RELAPSE PREVENTION: Classes in relapse prevention are available to all OPCS Clients, especially those who have recently experienced relapse. Classes are provided in three hour sessions and assist clients in recognizing their personal relapse process along with cognitive and behavioral strategies to reduce the likelihood of future relapse. Classes are provided in a strengths based manner, identifying current recovery capital and strategies to increase this capital.
